Alexander HeerParticipantGot another one – this time with the help of my wife on the sax and focusing more on vocals. Really starting to feel like we found a cool groove with this one.
Thinking about your feedback from last time I tried to add several different elements to hype the drops more while keeping it reasonable, especially given the more soft style at play here. Did some more extensive side-chaining on the drums, so hopefully they punch through the mix a bit more. Didn’t feel like extra bass variation was the key here – with the reese sitting more in the background compared to the melodic elements – so focused my variation there.
Appreciate any feedback!

GENIE HQKeymasterShowing off another side to your tastes and skills and doing it in such a classy and timeless way.
The processing on the vocals and sax are really nice, you have created a vintage and very authentic 70’s vinyl esque sound with that, which is not easy to do, the sax riff is really nice, infectious, memorable and undertsated.
As a piece of music it works, the arrangement, sound pallate, mix and tone. The beauty of these ‘vibes’ tunes is not to over smash the mix and obsess about mixdown, it doesn’t need it; let the character, human-ness and feeling move the listener. It does however need to be of a certain standard of loudness and clarity and this is basically there as a demo. Some possible pointers:
* Reverb on the intro vocal is perhaps a bit much / full on to have full frequency, maybe high-passing that moment might help?
* The sax riff is lush, rerally nice maybe try experimenting with some versions of it a bit more produced, some kind of textural trickery, different pitched moments, FX, just to see if you can get a few where the listener thinks “how has he done that?!” makes the ear curious. Just to experiment, might not come out well, but could be interesting…
* The beats are nice, lovely break, natural feel, Maybe just a bit more heat, push, thump in them, but really important not to overdo a tune like this. Reference with calibre to get a nice balance. Maybe having the washy rushy rides that come in later a bit more prominent might help the energy
* The bass is nice, but could maybe do with a bit more polish and movement in the overtones, just to make it pop a bit, but it’s not much. The bass could be done so many ways in tune like this, funky heavy spacious grooves like DLR, Dubby vibes like calibre, Longer tones like you have.
* It would be nice to hear a verison with more phrases and words from the singer, but less is often more. but this track sould quite easilly become more of a song rather than a track with vocal samples. Eirther direction could work though.
Overall this is a great tune, very little to critique as a demo, the last thing you’d want to do is mix the soul out of it..
You are really showing an impressive diversity and skill in production and musicality. keep it up!

Alexander HeerParticipantThanks again for the excellent feedback. I did feel like something was off with the initial vocals and the reverb, so thanks for calling attention to that.
I definitely want to experiment more with the sax and try to use it in different ways – so I am on that one. I did utilize granular synthesis and reverbs to take the sax in a couple different directions in this tune – but it’s all pretty subtle.
I will keep dialing in my recipe for beat processing – trying to make little tweaks to get more out of it. For my next track I am planning on doing something darker and dirtier – so it will be a good time to test pushing this more. I think upping the volume on the ride will definitely make the chorus feel more powerful for this tune.
For the bass I am working on using found sounds to add interesting top layers – so I am hoping that will add some juice. I also plan to really work hard on making the bass super varied and interesting for the next track, so that should be fun.
I really appreciate your continued feedback – as you now know my trajectory a bit better and I feel like I have a mentor on my side – pushing me to do better!
