Lamp Sessions #010 (June 2019) – Blade Runner
In June 1982, “Blade Runner” was released in theaters, taking place in a dystopian Los Angeles. The year? 2019. Maybe a bit cliched for a challenge, but the film and soundtrack have booth been sampled extensively in drum & bass. You are free to use any plug-ins, samples, etc., but try and work your submission in to the story someway.
Listen to the submissions & pick one demo as your favorite, other than your own submission; if you cannot participate but listen to the submissions, add your voice to the discussion. Feedback on final submissions is encouraged as well, but not required. Just remember “Want feedback? Give feedback.”
SUBMISSIONS DUE: June 30, 2019
VOTES DUE: Before the July samples go live, usually the 2nd of the month.
Genies and Moderators are exempt from prizes, so be sure to vote for another member.SUBMIT: Upload a private track on SoundCloud and share the link in this thread any time after June 21, 2019. Please, no work in progress uploads, or “feedback on what I’ve done so far”, just post your final submission. Collaborations are okay, but if you post a collab, you cannot also post a solo piece or additional collaborations.
PRIZE(?!?): GENIE HQ has final say, and will announce a winner at the conclusion of each month. Typically the winner will get a free month of Sample Genie next month, and possibly some additional feedback from a Sample Genie artist.
Any questions, just ask. Also, if you have any recommendations or ideas for future challenges, send them my way please!

If there was one important thing you should do with your life / weekend. It would be to watch the original Bladerunner film… !

😀 but being serious probably the film soundtrack with the biggest influence on the imagination of dance music in all of history. Not only that… an incredible film.

Done some sketches with soundtrack and dialog samples, and playing around with a bunch of CS-80 emulations. And yes, well worth watching the film!

I have also been auditioning specific synths and sounds.
I suggest watching Ridley’s “Final Cut”. Whatever you do, don’t watch the original theatrical release. Studio execs underestimated audience intelligence at the time, and forced a (terrible) Harrison Ford narration to go over the already finished film. Harrison read it extremely poorly, on purpose, thinking that if it was bad enough, it wouldn’t be used. But it was. Not good.

Looking forward to the entries!

I could work on this so much longer. Lots of fun. I went for some straightforward tropes, kind of a low-hanging voxquote, but I always loved that scene.
All of the instruments were made fresh by me. Lead-lead was actually done in a Reaktor synth called FM4 that was *perfect* for just the right amount of fm & phase distortion, but fuck me that thing is buggy as hell. Literally dropped the sound back to the wrong preset every time I hit play. But it sounded kind of authentic.
Kind of low key, at least for me…so much fun though, what a great challenge!

Harry I like the hype you built up and the way you have the tension grow, and the vocal you used works well. I think you should post it again when you have the best come in.
Shrike nice job of incorprating the main melody. I liked the stripped back approach you went with since I know you tend to go bigger and more aggressive. It’s got a good groove, and those tech/growl-y sounds in between the beats are cool. How’d you make those?

Thanks for listen and kind words.
Man, I make so many sounds, and have such a massive personal library at this point, so it’s hard to say how those particular sounds were made. I think though that they came off my pair of Behringer Neutrons, into the Rossum Morpheus filter, and then mucked with more in DAW. I often go bananas on resampling.
