Dom & Roland Joins Season 13
Announcement 1/6.
Sample Genie is about to embark on its 13th lap around the sun, and for this new season we have a very clear and simple objective: to inspire, encourage & foster creativity in music production. You can feel the scene tilting a bit (as it always does over the years) and we sense a deeper chapter is just on the edge of the leaning horizon. Now more than ever, we are really excited to be in the position to be a small part of this amazing genre.
So with this being said, we could not think of an artist that better suits our vision for s13 than Dom & Roland. He’s someone who has stayed the truest course over the span of his incredible career. The earliest track of his we can find is from 1994, proper formation jungle stuff. In the 31 years since, he has released a completely mind blowing amount of music. Discogs has him on 192 credits, 107 releases, 11 albums, 86 singles & EPs (!).
He’s collaborated with just about everyone in his corner of the music and has never ceased to keep refining and pushing his sound forward but without ever changing: when you have something that good going on, why would you? Aside from his finished releases, we would be remiss not to mention that he is also the mastermind engineer behind the cult classic break ‘The Tramen’ which has been used and resampled in hundreds – if not thousands – of tracks since. So as sample makers go it’s fair to say Dom has some serious heritage here!
When it comes to his production & sound, it’s very hard to single out only one area that stands out. Polyrhythmic, tonal, emotional, heavy, at times darkly cathartic, at others: emotionally meditative. They say the true acid test of an artist is to be able to convincingly capture both light and dark, and where else can that be more evident than in Dom’s work? A Dom & Roland production is as equally suited to a dimly lit underground nightclub at 3am, as it is to spinning away on a premium quality record player on a summer’s day, with all the windows and doors open. And you have to show massive respect to that fact Dom is still pressing up copies of his music on (beautiful looking) vinyl, released on his own label, Individual recordings – further solidifying the truly timeless and collectable nature of his music.
To enjoy a full tour of Dom’s prestigious background check out this superb conversation with Goldie from a few years ago. We put a playlist together of some of our favourite D&R tunes, but he’s one of those artists who make the task a challenge, to the point of almost being stressful, as there is just so much amazing music, it’s actually impossible to do!
A genre and scene always has roots – a point of origin. This season we are connecting the rising artists of today with the vast history and heritage of this incredible music. Dom will be sharing his tuition and artistic spirit with you, and we could not be any more delighted about this. A true honour.
