How would one synthesis such a bass timber? Is is a layered sub or a mid bass? Is it layered noise with ring modulation? Would be really cool to break this down, any thoughts?

Yes, I interpreted as layered white noise. Do you have any idea how to get going with something like this?

It might be distorted layer of the actual bass that’s been EQed to only let the tops pass, because it sounds very organic and moves along with the mids/sub. It has that typical top “crunch” you can usually get with distortion.
It could also be a white noise from the original synth the bass was made from, that would explain why it moves so well with the rest of the bass

Turns out it’s tape distorsion (spoke with Hydro). Now, anyone knows any good tape distorsion (general principles and best practices) tutorials? And maybe then some tutorials on how to apply tape distorsion on basses? Would be nice to get even a starting point on that sound.

Though I really enjoyed the tutorial, it doesn’t quite get close to the timbre that I am looking for. Any additional informations on how to recreate that initial sub in the song played by Hydro?

I wish I’d knew.
this type of sound is done very fast in fm8. single operator on sine with a bit self feed and then feed the noise osc into that operator. adjust volume, pitch envelope to your likes. If you want it detuned add another operator with slight diffrent ratio
What about a solution using saturation on a pure sine, using and saturating different frequency bands?
