I had every intention of emulating an old Akai or E-MU SP1200 sampler for this month, providing an audio file that was three seconds long, and everything was sped up as much as possible. Some history on that:

      Old-school sampling techniques

      https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/lost-art-sampling-part-1

      CHALLENGE #005
      Old School October

I feel like this is a little bit of a cop out on my part, but this month is free reign on synths & drum machines, but anything you do in a sampler has to be at a low resolution (at least 12-bits), and a BPM limit of 165 (or 82.5 if half-time), so nothing faster than that. Write an ode to jungle, make a juke track, write a slow churning half-time piece, or go somewhere entirely new. As for the low resolution on the sampler, if your chosen sampler(s) does not have an in-built way to downgrade your audio, insert a bit crusher or saturation plug-in that can. Plug-ins like Trash2, D16’s Decimort2, CamelPhat (if you still have a working copy), Logic’s BitCrusher, etc.

Resampling & processing the audio with plug-in effects is okay. Write a one & half to three minute demo track (+/- 15 seconds). Submit it for the challenge crew to hear!

Listen to the other submissions & pick one demo as your favorite, other than your own submission. Feedback on final submissions is encouraged as well, but not required. Just remember “Want feedback? Give feedback.”

SUBMISSIONS DUE: October 29, 2018 at 11:59 PM UTC
      Find UTC info here: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/timezone/utc

VOTES DUE: October 30, 2018 at 11:59 PM UTC
Genies and Moderators are exempt from prizes, so be sure to vote for another member.

SUBMIT: Upload a private track on SoundCloud and share the link in this thread any time after October 21, 2018. Please, no work in progress uploads, or “feedback on what I’ve done so far”, just post your final submission(s). Collaborations are okay, but if you post a collab, you cannot also post a solo piece or additional collaborations.

PRIZE(?!?): The submission with the most votes from fellow participants & Sample Genies, will get a free month of Sample Genie next month. GENIE HQ has final say, and will announce a winner at the conclusion of each month.

      Any questions, just ask.

      —–
Reminder: December’s challenge will be a member sourced sample pack & demo, fairly open parameters. We will need people to submit sounds for the pack in November, so keep that in mind. Will be looking for basses, breaks, individual drum hits, FX, foley, leads/mids, and pads. I will post more information as we get closer to that challenge’s start date.

I know we can all just go find some older jungle tracks for reference, but Harry, would you mind posting some specific reference for the kind of stuff that might come out of this challenge?

Old or new, doesn’t matter. Curious to hear your take on it.

For the old, the first three (vinyl) records I ever bought:

For the new, I’d say someone like Sully or some of the Teklife stuff, or Om Unit’s Phillip D Kick releases. Although, when I think of the BPM limit and more recent stuff, this is what comes to mind:

Pretty pumped for this, I got heavy into moving shadow a few months back so it’s cool to have a challenge focused on that era!
P.S do we get extra points for mono?

Ok, I’ll throw some into the hat:

      YOOJ:

And a tad more recent, but this tune was big big big for me back in the day:

Funny enough, I almost made mono one of the requirements this month.

And I was a ft. on a Moving Shadow EP, years ago…

First, I love “Babylon” and the Trace remix of it, I think the “dog bark” version?

And a tad more recent, but this tune was big big big for me back in the day:

The vinyl and digital releases of this have about 30 seconds of samples at the end of the audio. Probably 5 or 6 Lemon D (or maybe Dillinja?) breaks, some bass. I remember buying a .wav copy of it on Beatport to get the samples. I can zip and upload for anyone that’s interested in them.

        Yes please.

I only owned this in a multi-tune MHeadz collection, on vinyl, when it first came out. Prolly around ’97-’98. Still have the whole lot.

I have so much old dnb vinyl, lol. Remember lugging around record boxes, Harry? Especially when I had a gig that required air travel, lugging that heavy ass shit through the airport. I felt like a modern day guitar-lugging bluesman (or whatever your romantic vision of old, old musicians might be). If I only knew then what I know now…

& eff me, a RobPlayfordMovingShadowAlumnus, eh? That’s legend bruv. Much respect.

Bought this on my first trip to San Francisco, filled it up with used store finds and a couple trips to Compound Records.

        Record Crate

And I wrote “Broadcast” with Marcio/Telemetrik, was on one of his Corrupt Souls EPs. Also, my old roommate was Bryan/SGNL, who was 1/3rd of Robot Death Squad with Evan/Hybris and D-Struct, and I think they were the last ever release on Moving Shadow.

First time sending in a track. Bassline designed using DC Breaks video from this month. Plenty of bit and frequency reduction.

I like the little extra fills under the drums, and I like the bass, just needs some more variation after the breakdown. I know the title is “On Fire Tonight”, but for me the Redman vocal takes away from the track, but keep in the soundclash sample. Maybe tweak out the riser more, and finish this up!

        – I like the gritty bassline
        – the percussion/drum fills (at the end of the bar) are somewhat poking out too much and damage the overall groove
        – the background organic pads are nice, could work well or additional progression of tune
        – tune overall almost begs for some heavy hitting part with amen bits (but maybe that’s just what my brain expects from this era)
        🙂

I really do like the bass! Hope you submit some samples of it in the December sample pack challenge!
Overall, the track seems well structured overall with an ace intro and I like the melodic textures.
I’d agree with Balron that it probably needs some massive amens to blare over it to complete the drums, and personally I’d highpass the bass at 80-100ish Hz and put a really long 808 kick in as a sub if you want to stick with the classic jungle vibes.

For some reason, I thought the deadline is on 30th 😀
Was planning to work on it more today as I only got something shitty. I learned I don’t know how to jungle.

Would it be ok to still add my entry now (seems like I might not be the only one who missed it)?

I missed the boat on my own creation 🙁

I had a remix deadline for a local label competition, and then just got stuck in a loop of making synth patches for the past week. Here is the remix I did.

I did this a week ago. I wanted to go back and touch the shitty slap mix, but it just didn’t happen.

I am GRATEFUL for this competition, though. I have never used bit crushing or otherwise fx on a regular basis. I now see how some of this stuff can be used into perpetuity. I didn’t “jungle”, I chose this opportunity to go halftime (another first for me), and I just threw every kind of bitcrush, lofi, retro effect I had at it. I really like some of the textures. The piece as a whole is pretty unformed.

Yeah, the intro textures are sounding great. I like the direction you went with this, a touch of humor at the end section too with the dying bits.

Let me join the “dope sound design” queue 😉
        – this might be your hardest hitting snare so far :p
        – I can imagine this as a heavy tune for this year with all the lofi processing turned off
        – the shaker gets in a way a bit. I would tell him to go away and sit in the corner. Let me sail on all these bass waves 😉
        – save this project, get back to it in 6 months from now and make it sound like a creepy uncle of Noisia

Man this bangs! You could probably quantise a couple of bits but you’ve really nailed the old-school stomper. It’s the kind of sound I still hear played out pretty regularly and it really is ace on a big system

Ominous intro, almost like a funeral dirge. I know you’re not super in to it, but some ideas you could build off. The vocal chops of the end gave me mid-90s No U-Turn vibes.

Sorry this is also a day late!! I also thought the deadline was 30th, gonna actually put it in my calendar next month!
I did also get a couple of more modern jungley tunes done too but I figured this fits the old-school bit of the challenge.
Had ace fun figuring out how to timestretch in Sampler using an envelope mapped loop then realising Simpler of all things has the ableton timestretch built in, so I’ve actually finally taken the time to learn how to use it; the whole tune is sampler or simpler, no audio tracks.
Also, sorry if I went a bit overboard on the downsampling, I really like the shitty tape-rip vibe from 22KHz.

I love how the bass hits sound, the “booUUM booUUM” and the stretched hits. In to this one, lots of layers over the length of the demo, good drum programming too. Think you’ll have an interesting demo for November too, if you do a demo.

I am sorry but I have no feedback. This is just what I imagine when I think about the old school jungle. Seriously… just finish this, upload it into a middle of some youtube jungle playlist and nobody will notice it during autoplay.

You should hear all the false starts on this one Balron, I went a bit too hard on the whole “lol wots structure” attitude you got in quite a few early 90s tracks and it made for some pretty unbearable listening 😛

Hey thanks for the kind words, all, and thanks for seeing through the muddy shit mix ahaha.

Fake (nice name!) yours is defo jungly. Took me back. Nice work.

Balron yours wasn’t nearly as bad as advertised. The intro could use some polish, but once it dropped it did its usual Lord Balron thing, which is to fucking JAM, especially the bits after that last turnaround…dig those drums.

I’m gonna shake things up a little and vote for AMJ this month. That’s a strong first posting, mate, and welcome to the fray! The mix sounds severely lo-fi relative to today’s standards, but that was kinda the point, eh? You may think about throwing some air in there (hi shelf around ~3-6khz). But it was groovy and it made my head bob.

November should be a fun one, but honestly I am most excited for December, where we use member-sourced samples. Thanks to all that continue to participate, and if you’re on the sidelines, GET IN THE GAME!

I think all the votes are in…what say you, Mr Genie!?!?!

Sorry we’ve been quiet on this one, such a variety in it all. Great theme and really interesting entries from everybody, no question.
Hopefully the exercise has helped to get people into the bit-reduced and wicked sounds of years past. Things are beginning to sound perhaps a bit sterile in places? Maybe this movement will return in some way?

Purely on the basis of fulfilling the task set and doing in such an authentic way, the vote has to go to the artist formally known as 6F7A. [awesome new name btw ;]
It might be worth sending this to Dead Man’s Chest / Eveson, possibly something he’d consider for his label Western Lore, or if not maybe some Dj Support.

      Drop us an email sir..

We’d agree with all positive comments said about the other tunes on here. Each one has potential.
very interesting month, and well done to all.

      PS.
