October was busy for me, so I wasn’t able to actually do challenge sketches myself, but I have plenty of these planned out to go in to next year. November is going to be fairly simple, and I’ll relax the “rules”, see if we can get more members participating. Thanks to the regulars and the newcomers!

CHALLENGE #006
No 2-Step NovemberThe standard 2-step, on a beat grid/MIDI roll with kicks on the 1 and 1.3.3.1, and snares on the 1.2 and 1.4:
This month we are looking for different drum patterns, not the standard 2-step. Are you going to strip things down, go half-time? Shake things up, explore drumfunk choppage? Keep it 2-step, but shift the second kick and see if it funks the rhythm in a new way? It is up to you. Any sounds, samples, plug-ins, it is up to you, just remember this challenge is focused on the drums more than anything else. Write a one & half to three minute demo track (+/- 15 seconds). Submit it for the challenge crew to hear!
Listen to the other submissions & pick one demo as your favorite, other than your own submission. Feedback on final submissions is encouraged as well, but not required. Just remember “Want feedback? Give feedback.”
SUBMISSIONS DUE: November 30, 2018
VOTES DUE: Before the December samples go live, usually the 2nd of the month.
Genies and Moderators are exempt from prizes, so be sure to vote for another member.SUBMIT: Upload a private track on SoundCloud and share the link in this thread any time after November 23, 2018. Please, no work in progress uploads, or “feedback on what I’ve done so far”, just post your final submission. Collaborations are okay, but if you post a collab, you cannot also post a solo piece or additional collaborations.
PRIZE(?!?): The submission with the most votes from fellow participants & Sample Genies, will get a free month of Sample Genie next month. GENIE HQ has final say, and will announce a winner at the conclusion of each month.
Any questions, just ask.

Reminder: December’s challenge will be a member sourced sample pack & demo, fairly open parameters. There will be a post asking people to submit sounds for the pack soon. Will be looking for basses, breaks, individual drum hits, FX, foley, leads/mids, and pads."Knowledge kept is knowledge lost." - Bobbito Garcia

Word, looking forward to hearing what you come up with, your clips on Funk Forum have been cool.
I had the idea for this a few months ago, and I think QZB said something in their video two months ago that reinforced going with this theme.
Also, I like alliteration. Months away, but April Arpeggiator Appreciation month.

Here is my entry for this month. Main kick and snare based on a Sean Paul structure then built on with a double kick on the start of every other bar. Amen break deconstructed with Splice Audio to Midi and then randomised. Personally, I think it gets slightly lost in the final mix but time ran out. Bassline created using this month’s Patch in Serum.
Great challenge again this month. Feedback welcome and looking forward to the other entries. Cheers. AMJ

Had enough of breaks last month so I’ve been getting back into Addictive Drums. Expect another upload before the deadline with a completely different snare though, I just can’t get it right and it’s really getting to me!

Rushed sketch, not really mixed or anything. I actually chucked a few different beat clips in to a randomizer, then saved the variations I liked to create the beat. I want to go in on it more, soon.

Joppa interesting beat and sick bassline. digging your style.
R4nsom like the paradox sounding style on that track.
Fake digging the bass drums combo and style. bouncy.
Balron that’s a lethal tune man. Drop is super driving. My vote goes to BALRON this month. Heavy weight!!

Voting for Juan/Joppa’s demo this month, my favorite of your Lamp Session submissions so far.
Great work AMJ, Fake and Balron, enjoyed what you all put together as well!

AMJ – Great jungle vibes, I actually really like how the randomised amens sit, they do a lot to keep it rolling with nice variety and your FX are spot on!
Balron – Pretty heavy!! Hope you submitted some of those bass sounds for this month, they’re awesome. I enjoy your drum variety, I just struggle to hear the sub through most of the drops
Harry – Some very nifty drum work, I hope you included them this month! Only feedback would be the harmonics on the bass seem pretty muted, It sounds like the lowpass could be closed more or a multiband compressor put on to bring out the tops a bit more if that’s what you’re going for?
Joppa – Cracking tune! Works really well, I love that minimal breaksy style, you’ve pulled it off really well! Really solid variety in bass as well, clearly a lot of work has gone in. Only thing I’d change is the kick that comes in at 1:52 is a bit loud and poppy compared to the rest of the drums.
Some really interesting tunes this month, but my final vote has to go to Joppa/Juan!

My notes:
AMJ Jungle – Oldschool jungle breakcore 🙂 The break and bass are great. Sometimes there are too many elements and it’s hard to keep up with the rhythm. But that’s basically a case of mentioned breakcore anyway. The percussion triplets (I guess) are quite distracting for me. Dig the old school stabs 🙂
Fake – Nice intro->drop transition. I enjoy the initial bass ‘melody’ but I was expecting that to somehow progress/unfold during the tune. Instead, it just comes and goes here and there. Good groove overall but it’ quite monotonous (haha, I should the last one to complain about monotonous stuff). Good mixdown as usually 🙂
Harry – Hard to judge a sketch. There’s no transition between ‘intro’ and drop and the sound is lacking quite a bit. The kick stands out too much and feels heavy for that nice bassline. I, however, enjoy the hats. Both their sound and rhythm. That’s really nice. You usually don’t have enough time for these entries imo. I do hope you will find some next year and we will get to listen to a serious R4NSOM tune 😉
JUAN – As Harry already said, this is your best entry. Quite a big step I would say. Both structure and mixdown are good. Maybe the hats could be turned down a bit. The weakest point right now seems to be the intro-drop transition. Both (first and second) could be improved to work with energy/expectations more. I do not have a specific solution but if you want to work on it try to listen to your favorite tunes and see what they do to make you really anticipate and enjoy the drop (when it comes).
