We are back, after a three-month hiatus for the Sample Genie demo call, and I hope to see some regulars and new participants this month. I am keeping this month simple, anything goes aside from the theme piece.

      —–
Lamp Sessions #008 (April 2019) – Arpeggiator Showers

I hear arpeggiators in dnb, and I think of Konflict on the techy side, and trance’n’bass experiments at the other. Arpeggiators can be used in creative ways, and that’s the goal this month. Experiment with your DAW’s native arpeggiator tools, your synths’ arpeggiator matrix, or download a demo of a dedicated VST (Xfer’s Cthullu, Cream). Try an arpeggiator on a patch of percussion hits, slow down the rate on a bass synth, layer up pads with different patterns. Other than that, you can use any sounds, samples, synths, tools, etc. Just try to have a couple elements using arpeggiation.

Listen to the submissions & pick one demo as your favorite, other than your own submission; if you cannot participate but listen to the submissions, add your voice to the discussion. Feedback on final submissions is encouraged as well, but not required. Just remember “Want feedback? Give feedback.”

      SUBMISSIONS DUE: April 30, 2018

VOTES DUE: Before the May samples go live, usually the 2nd of the month.
Genies and Moderators are exempt from prizes, so be sure to vote for another member.

SUBMIT: Upload a private track on SoundCloud and share the link in this thread any time after April 21, 2019. Please, no work in progress uploads, or “feedback on what I’ve done so far”, just post your final submission. Collaborations are okay, but if you post a collab, you cannot also post a solo piece or additional collaborations.

PRIZE(?!?): GENIE HQ has final say, and will announce a winner at the conclusion of each month. Typically the winner will get a free month of Sample Genie next month, and possibly some additional feedback from a Sample Genie artist.

      Any questions, just ask.

Just curious as I’m new here. Is the challenge to produce an entire track that features arpeggiated elements or just a single element that could be used as a sample?

Main points of these are to get people to at least sketch some ideas, and get some activity between members. So far since starting these I have connected with a few members, and I know of some collaborations that have grown out people meeting each other doing these.

Even if you just spend an hour on a sketch with arps this month, post it up.

Tried to get out of my comfort zone and throw arps on things I wouldn’t usually use them for. There’s only one recognizable synth arp in this, the rest are on things like percussion, little glitchy textures, hats, and an atmos thing. Definitely found some cool tricks I wouldn’t have otherwise, good challenge.

Still not settled in from my move (anyone here in the Boston, MA area?), and was working on some other projects, but here’s one of my very rough sketches, which I might work up later:

Now this month I did have some more conventional ideas but I just really loved how this one fit around the vocals. Other than the obvious arpy melodies and amen fills, I originally sequenced the drums with an arpeggiator controlled by midi pads but I’ve edited them quite a bit manually to make them a bit more bearable. Enjoy!

sorry guys, I deleted the original track because I was embarassed about it, but I don’t think I even spent that long on it so I shouldn’t be. anyways if it’s not too late here’s the same one I submitted originally, reuploaded:

No need to be embarrassed mate, its a cool tune! I think a lot of us feel the same way about their tunes when they don’t meet their own internal standards or vision for the track (lord knows I’m embarrassed of mine).

cheers man there’s just a few changes i really wish i had made before submitting. the main bit being the core drum loop skipping a beat then playing whack hits in the rythm, its kind of jolting/jarring. would probably not work on a d floor?

Yeah I’d say last call for any stragglers, and you can all begin voting.

Please vote inline after this post, not as a reply to individual tunes. Just keeps things cleaner. Feedback for tunes, or even just big ups can be a reply to the tune.

I’ll personally have a listen soon, but once again super great to have this much participation! R E S P E C T

This is a lil bit of cheating as I’ve only just noticed these competitions – will be participating for the rest, but this is the closet thing to an arp I have in previous tracks

Not looking to enter per say but this was a layer of 2 synths, just playing with the attack and decay which is probably quite a common process for most arp sounds and evolving them.

Gravekeeper – Half time! That grimey main bass is WIKKED. Digging the Stranger Things vibe with the arps from the outset. Nice job, happy to have you in the challenge.

R4NSOM – you’re doing such cinematic things for these challenges! I feel like this would work very well for a dark film chase scene. As someone who always tries to incorporate story and narrative into my music, I think that is an awesome thing.

Fake – you’re just a little badass aren’t you. No sarcasm. Big ups.

Struktcha – dude that was fucking wikked. That’s like ’98 Ed Rush & Op type stuff, and I love that. I think the mixing could use some love, but it’s a great start, and you’ve got a lot of the music in a great place. Not gonna lie, that stuttering kick drum is kinda throwing me off a bit, I think that would kind whack the dancefloor out a little, and as a dj it would be a little frustrating.

Evasion – that’s a nice mix, nice music, very solid. I have very little feedback on this, other than the build before the drop could maybe use some plussing…or minusing. I’d either amp it up a little more, or let it die a little more, right now it feels like it’s on the fence, but a little non-commital. But that’s just me, and I am a little but psycho. Also, welcome to fray.

My vote goes to: FAKE. Some fantastic entries this month. Fake just keeps doing it and doing it. Well done, my friend.
Evasion, you had a strong entry as well, just slightly edge out by it being a pre-existing tune. Come back next month!

And just a word on the caveating and “embarrassment”…we are lucky to have an extremely supportive and well behaved community here at SG, and we’re also lucky to have members at all levels of experience. We’ve got some pros on here, all the way down to those of you that have only done this for a few months. You will never be laughed at, you will never be ridiculed, and you will always get nothing but support from this group, Harry, myself, and esp the Genie work hard to make sure this is the case. You can call yourself a noob if you want, and you can even claim some embarrassment, but don’t let anything stop you from participating and posting your work. Those that do *ALWAYS* get better, and that is the main reason we are here.

Let’s get those votes in! EVERYONE CAN VOTE, not just the participants. This should be a spectator sport as well, especially if by dipping the toes in via voting, it means we get more peeps participating next time.

      RESPECT

thanks for the feedback, I know what you mean. There was definitely more potential I didn’t quite unlock with that track. All part of the progression and the beauty of hindsight…. I over listened to it so much it became a real pain to listen to!

Thanks for the welcome, excited to try this months challenge, it’s a good push towards trying different things and the community seems good here too.

Nice entries all round on this guys!

Although Shrike has maybe pushed the theme of the challenge harder and incorporated it further into the tune, Fake has written a really cool tune in the process too.. So the SG vote goes to him on this occasion!

Sorry this is a bit late but thanks for the votes and feedback guys, I’ll try get some Missy Elliot samples into this coming month’s challenge too as they seem to have gone down quite well!

Gravekeeper – I love the dark 80s synths you have going on in this, combined with the drop it makes for a really nice grim aesthetic. My only feedback really would be to consider swinging the drop a bit. Even just offsetting all the hihats can do a world of difference in terms of groove, in this case I’d go through and tweak everything to be slightly out though. Other than that I like it though, great work!

Harry – I’ve already mentioned this but I think some great big 808 kicks as a sub layer would really complete this, really love it as a loop though, great texture and well filled out. Look forward to hearing you finish this!

Shrike – Yeah I love this one, been away from hard neuro for a while now but this makes me miss it! Rolls really well with meaty basses and a nice variety throughout the tune. Only real feedback would be to maybe sidechain a bit harder off the snare just to help it really pop out of the mix.

Struktcha – Man I wouldn’t be embarrassed about that, it’s a tight tune! I personally love unexpected drum patterns, it gets pretty boring hearing the same drum pattern for 6 hours at a club. I’d take this a step further and say write a couple more variations on that fill and alternate between them.
Other than that the only thing I’d change is again bring out the fundamental of the snare a bit, it’s mostly just a noise hit that gets through at the moment.

Evasion – Well yeah that’s a finished tune, real shame you didn’t do it in this last month really! Would love to have a poke through the project file for this, the whole tune bangs but you’ve really got a silky smooth mixdown too. Is there anything particularly jazzy on your master buss holding it together or is it just all in the mix?

Overall my vote goes to Shrike though, best use of arps while being pure filth!
