      Lamp Sessions #009 (May 2019) – Chaos

This month is a little different, and maybe asking a little bit more than usual. Francis Preve is a sound designer, professor, and music producer, and he also writes informative articles about synthesis. One of his articles last year was about injecting chaos in to software synths:

      https://www.emusician.com/how-to/how-to-chaos-rules

What I would like to explore are methods that introduce some chaos, and see what comes of it. Whether it’s a small amount of random LFO on a source, to full on uncontrolled chaos, or even just randomizing synth presets for 15 minutes. I’m asking fellow Lamp Session participants to test & explore, and share anything they find interesting. Create a soundscape out of your experiments, share some patches or samples of what you create, or write a sketch that utilize sounds created through your sound design experiments. When you post this month, give a brief statement about what you tried, what you liked and/or disliked, and what you found challenging. If you need ideas or suggestions, ask the crew here.

Listen to the submissions & pick one demo as your favorite, other than your own submission; if you cannot participate but listen to the submissions, add your voice to the discussion. Feedback on final submissions is encouraged as well, but not required. Just remember “Want feedback? Give feedback.”

      SUBMISSIONS DUE: May 31, 2018

VOTES DUE: Before the June samples go live, usually the 2nd of the month.
Genies and Moderators are exempt from prizes, so be sure to vote for another member.

SUBMIT: Upload a private track on SoundCloud and share the link in this thread any time after May 21, 2019. Please, no work in progress uploads, or “feedback on what I’ve done so far”, just post your final submission. Collaborations are okay, but if you post a collab, you cannot also post a solo piece or additional collaborations.

PRIZE(?!?): GENIE HQ has final say, and will announce a winner at the conclusion of each month. Typically the winner will get a free month of Sample Genie next month, and possibly some additional feedback from a Sample Genie artist.

Any questions, just ask. Also, if you have any recommendations or ideas for future challenges, send them my way please! Next month though, that one is already lined up…

This is a lesson on Using Digital Distortion over everything. Digital Distortion I have found can come from many places. My personal favorite is to just overdrive the plug-in and see what happens. The trick is getting it not to be Harsh and painful. This I find very difficult to pull off. I have applied the same techniques for overdriving over and over and this song was one of the few times I felt it came together well.

Hey man, that’s cool that you provide that, maybe just as a reference.

The spirit of the competition is to create something entirely new based on the criteria provided, not to pull something from a backlog that best matches the criteria. And hey, maybe I’m off-base, and you did create this very shortly after the contest was announced. But in case not…

And- game on SG’ers! Let your inner squarepusher come out!

Hey man, I just finished the tune and it happened to fit the challenge. If you want me to pull it I will.

No, I think that’s fair, if it’s fresh work. Thanks for participating!

Cool, can I submit more than one? I wrote another song today.

These challenges are something I put together voluntarily. Typically I ask for one submission per challenge, and posted near the end of the month, usually after the 21st of the month. I try to keep the Lamp Sessions fairly rigid, but they are a work in progress.

There is a general WIP/demo thread, but I think it fell back a page or two because of the recent Demo submission that Sample Genie held. A few people have been posting individual threads looking for feedback as well.

Just thought I’d give this a bump and see where everyone’s up to!
Also am I good submitting something with no drums or bass?

Yes, and I am slacking on my intended sketches. Plenty of ideas, no action yet though.

sick couple entries so far. where is everyone else’s submission? not many takers this month?

this is a nearly done tune that i whipped up overnight from scratch.
i’m choosing this tune to submit because theres a little bit of LFO chaos going on, one on the virus for the squelchy (atmos…ish) pad, and then on the main bassline theres like three lfos modulating it and different speeds with different starting point offsets, lfos on three different notch filters and an lfo on the volume and pan. (but reduced the stereo width a bit and also kept things mono below 180 on every channel)

theres a real glitched out sound that comes in now and then that could be clashing with the bassline, i might not have cut enough of the lows off. i dont think it muddies the sound too bad, but it sort of gets lost among the other elements once everything is firing.

some samples featured from the sample genie sample packs so you might have heard some of the elements before but i did try to tweak them and make them my own a little bit.

one sample i used from the sample pack was made by xtrah and i really like what it adds to the track. really choppy almost vocal but not quite a vocal sample. you can hear it at 1:32, theres three instances descending in semitones.

any constructive feedback would be great, cheers. if i get some good tips i will most likey revisit the tune to polish it up etc.

i hope this is chaotic enough. i guess its kind of a subtle effect all those lfos on the bassline but still. i dunno

ahh! i’m so bad at checking this forum, desperately needs that email notification for thread replies feature, i do recall reading somewhere it’s in the works. by the looks of it i’m not alone though, seeing how few people entered for May.

cool entry JUAN/joppa, sounds like an alien factory. and thanks for the vote

my vote would have gone to JUAN but i guess it is over a week into june. and there are no other entries still live.

haven’t checked out june’s challenge yet. hold my beer

I built out a track around a bass hook that was inspired by the idea of chaos. For the element of chaos, I decided push the rate of the LFO/filters to the extremes, alternating between super fast and super slow. It drops in at 44 seconds. The swing created between the fast and slow chomping ended up sounding pretty cool to me, so the rest of the track stemmed from that idea.

I personally really dig the creaking/chomping effect it adds to the track, but have gotten mixed opinions about the groove conflicts it creates. Maybe a bit too much chaos for the resulting groove that I created haha.

Any feedback or insight or whatever is very much appreciated!

        No worries.

Chaotic month for me, just no music to show for it. I had grand plans of just recording my kid hammering away on a controller, and then picking the parts that I liked the sound of. Plus using random LFO’s on different synths.
