I contacted Francis Preve earlier this week to see if he had any suggestions or ideas for future Lamp Sessions challenges, and he wrote back. Rather than a challenge suggestion, he sent the following:

Here is a technique from one of my classes. I use this to help students experiment with specific tools to better understand how they work.

Set the amp envelope to instant attack and decay, full sustain, and slight release.

From there, select different modulation sources – LFO, envelope, mod wheel, step sequencers, etc – and assign ONE modulator to ONE parameter at a time, then play with the parameters of the modulator, adjust modulation depth, and adjust the destination parameter itself.

Using those variables, it’s easier to understand what each element does.
