      The current issue of computer music sees DLR deconstructing his recent tune “The Grip”
      which is a killer ! I ordered my copy of it to watch the full thing, in the meantime the first part is up on youtube here.

      What y’all think of it ?

      I like the ways he goes about getting the most out of your core elements and also
      getting rid of the digital unpleasant frequencies (mostly mids and tops) from soft synths using analogue emulation plugins, tape saturation and so on. Unfortunately not everyone can afford UAD plugins and it seems to play a large role in his sound. I’m interested if anyone knows about alternative compression/saturation/distortion plugins to get that gritty Metalheadz type sound.

      There are the Waves plugins and they are often on heavy discount.
      I just got myself the CLA-76 Compressor / Limiter and the PuigTec EQs.

      I use the slate stuff. They have a deal where you pay 20 bucks a month and you get all the gear. Virtual mix racks, tape compressors and virtual channel strips and wikid mastering compressors. Highly recommend !

      At a previous Digital Labz seminar, Break sung the praises of the DBX 266 compressor, a really affordable hardware unit that had a great sound for beats. Worth thinking about!

      He has the older discontinued one: http://dbxpro.com/en/products/266xl

      but the new model has the same circuitry: http://dbxpro.com/en/products/266xs

      under £100 new, or even cheaper second hand on Ebay 😀

      What Genie said.
      Also scope:
      * uHe presswerk
      * glitchmachines subvert (for all distortions possible)
      * fatso
      * distressor

      I picked up two of these units off eBay, and they are pretty phat sounding! Running them as external compressors via our d8b and Cubase Pro as external plugins (pretty sick process chain now C8Pro has really cool latency setup), so we can parallel compress 😀
