      Hi all,

I am looking to get really experimental with my production, I am looking for a field recorder to sample some natural sounds from outside to put into some tracks whether it be natural, percussion etc.

Can Anyone recommend a cheap, great sounding recorder just to get to grips with them.

      Cheers,
      Matt

That’s the one I have been looking at, seems to have some pretty solid reviews.

Yeah 24-bit PCM. for less than $100USD. Pretty hard to beat

I’ve got a Zoom H2n, it’s great but I have a friend with the H1n and I think I would’ve been happy with that. There’s a video somewhere of Billain recording a cat purring with an H1n.

      I have a DR-05 too, it’s great, especially for the money 🙂

I have a zoom IQ 5. This is a stereo mic for iPhone with a zoom recorder app. its not the best quality but makes cool field recordings in 120′ 90′ or MID/SIDE and its way less money

Just thought I would update you all, in the end I purchased Zoom H1n, came with cubase LE as well which was a nice little bonus even though I already have Ableton. Everyone loves a freebie lol.

I will be putting together a small pack of foley etc for people to see what the little thing can do, keep your eyes peeled 🙂

This might be a controversial point, but I’ve found a phone is actually a really handy substitute. Obviously it has it’s flaws, especially in the low end and at low volumes, but for spontaneous recording it’s something you wouldn’t really think of and a great starting point for processing into percussion and foley layers. The awful bitrate of phone calls really doesn’t do the mics they put in phones these days justice, you might be surprised by the results!

I might be wrong, but I vaguely remember reading in an interview that Zes did this whole album with just a guitar DI and his phone to record for example.
