      CHALLENGE #003
This challenge is a nod to Sample Genie’s original launch, with a theme of Natural vs. Industrial.

      Natural vs. Industrial

This is wide open to interpretation & tools. Create a sound, soundscape, ambient piece, drum loop, drone, atmosphere, whatever, but one submission has to represent your take on nature, and one submission industrial. We are not looking for demos/tracks, just some interesting sound design work. For a bit of history, the original Sample Genie sound design contest took place in the spring of 2013 and was won by Dusty Fungus:

You have almost four weeks to design something and upload, and then a week to listen to the other submissions & pick one submission as your favorite, other than your own submission(s). You get two submissions, one of each type of sound.

SUBMISSIONS DUE: August 28, 2018 at 11:59 PM UTC
      Find UTC info here: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/timezone/utc

VOTES DUE: August 30, 2018 at 11:59 PM UTC
Genies and Moderators are exempt from prizes, so be sure to vote for another member.

FILE NAME FORMAT #1: (your artist name) – Lamp Sessions #003 – Natural
FILE NAME FORMAT #2: (your artist name) – Lamp Sessions #003 – Industrial
If your submission is your Natural sound, put that in the file; if your Industrial sound, put that in the file.

SUBMIT: Upload a private track on SoundCloud and share the link in this thread any time after August 21, 2018. Please, no work in progress uploads, or “feedback on what I’ve done so far”, just post your final submission(s). Collaborations are okay, but if you post a collab, you cannot also post a solo piece or additional collaborations. Also, if you are okay with your submission(s) being part of a member sourced sample pack, please enable downloads or send me a private link (soundcloud.com/r4ns0m or email me [email protected] with the subject “Lamp Sessions #003 download”).

PRIZE(?!?): The submission with the most votes from fellow participants & Sample Genies, will get a free month of Sample Genie next month.

      Any questions, just ask.

      —–
Also FYI, December’s challenge will be a member sourced sample pack (separate from this month’s submissions) & demo, fairly open parameters though. We will need people to submit sounds for the pack in November, so keep that in mind. Will be looking for basses, breaks, individual drum hits, FX, foley, leads/mids, and pads. I will post more information as we get closer to that challenge’s start date.

I’ve gotta say this is a really fun task, but I’ve gotta say there’s a part of me that wishes I didn’t hear the dusty fungus entry. So much detail, sounds like something out of transformers.

The bar is set pretty high there! Five years on you’d expect the bar to be raised even higher than that, and I’m sorry I can’t even imagine anything beyond that; let alone create it.

I’m gonna have to pull up my sleeves here if I wanna compete here!

Looking forward to hearing new names getting involved! And this one is pretty open, the Dusty Fungus piece doesn’t have to be the benchmark for either submission. I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do for mine.

This is great! Taking off the genre pressures and free to roam..

So to clarify, people can either pick a category to enter, or go for both if they want to?

Definitely excited to hear the results of this one!

Yes, people can either submit one sound signifying one of the two categories, or two submissions, one for each category.

All right peeps, so here’s my entries:

I felt kinda happy with elements of the industrial, but it lacks symbolism, I was trying to go for realism, but I struggled creating an environment and a story line inside this environment, there’s not enough of linked symbols, it seems a bit disjointed. Fun but hard challenge. Foley is all my own recordings, sirens are synthesised and I tried to reverse engineer how Dusty Fungus did elements of his. The truck at the start is a pitch down drum loop in a granular sampler, accidental but sounded cool. Lots of the ambience are noise foley with a convolution reverb with a crazy sample put inside to get extra filmic weirdness.

Nature I’m more proud of, music sounds like nature to me! I wanted to convey an intertwining like DNA spiralling around, so i used some weird polymeter in the arp with a euclidean rhythm offset against another straight arp and sounds like weaving roots or unfurling branches. The foley is done about five mins from where I live there’s a small river with a bunch of waterfalls and it sounds sick. I wanted the whole thing to carry on rising and growing like nature, so I apologise but I’d say the first 1.30 was the submission the rest is so people on here don’t get annoyed after listening to a build up with no drop 😛

And I guess I have a SC now, would appreciate the follow and will follow and check out your tunes back.

They are both nice, but that second one is trippel-lovely with that processed female vox.

Ahh wicked cheers for having a listen and I guess thank you but I can’t help but be slightly offended you think I sound like a female singing!

      Ok, submission time is open.

Back from a two week holiday at the beach, recorded a bunch of natural sounds, not sure if I’ll get something submitted myself though.

Hey, I am skipping this one (I know nothing about this kind of abstract sound design as I am still focusing mostly on arrangement and mixdown stuff.), but looking forward to the submissions. Good luck everyone 😉

I had to take a pass too, other deadlines in the way.

Thanks to Forgot their Name, Shrike and Adam/DJ Tuor for taking this on.

September’s challenge is all lined up, will post it on September 1. It’ll be a return to the demo track format, with a single synth focus.

Pouring out some of my forty for the missing soldiers, big ups to the entrants.

Adam,I love what you did with some single, connected notes. You took them farther than I thought a single note might ever go. Dramatic and effective, nice 1 mate.

However,I must vote for my youngblood Forget their Name. I’ve been impressed with everything you’ve posted, and these entries are no exception. I’d be willing to bet I’m not the only one around here that is interested to hear what you create next. Well done, my son.

Not a lot of respect being shown to this challenge…

I get it that not everyone can enter, but the whole thing has gone dark now, even with discussions & votes & soforth.

      Maybe we can remedy that?

Well, we generally don’t have many members participating, so when just a few of us skip some challenge, it makes it look even emptier. Wouldn’t link that with respect tho 😉

Only participants (and HQ) can vote and the only one who didn’t is “Forgot their Name”, who kinda went silent after his initial post in his payment-related topic.

      Dear all,

This month’s submissions are nothing short of impressive!
In fact perhaps the most interesting work, artistically speaking, we’ve had submitted yet. The Sound design on all of the industrial stuff is top class; you could all easily get a writers credit on one of the new Star Wars Films!
Hopefully the exercise itself will have given rise to some fresh samples and patches you can use in your tracks, or perhaps inspired an epic intro that sounds like an off-world visitation…

The POV from us on these competitions is that they are great, and as a long as you mods’ want to keep running them, long may they continue. We are – and never have been – about number counts on this forum. It’s about quality of conversation and content over quantity, Avoiding ‘spew’ wherever possible.
If the forum sits quiet for a few days, a week, then that’s all fine. We are of the inclination, speak when you have something worth saying; reply when your intentions are positive.

So if three wonderful, creative souls enter a monthly challenge and we get to hear their music… what a marvellous thing that is. 4? That’s just brilliant. More? Simply a bonus…

This month has been very hard to pick a winner, of the industrial stuff particularly, there is little between it.
Adam Tuor: really nice swelling atmospheric moments, Shrike: brilliant definition in the top end detail, and forgot their name: Excellent sounds all round, but the nature submission was fantastic too, visualising helical DNA, just awesome stuff.

      So we vote winners:

      Industrial: Shrike
      Natural: Forgot their name

Come forth and get in touch!

Thank you, Genie, especially for providing this dojo in which to train.

      WELL DONE ALL.

Forget, I hope we see you back my young bruv.
