Lamp Sessions #014 (October 2019) – Starting From Scratch

I actually had no plan for this month, been in a bit of a fog all of September, but I did have a few ideas on ice, so to speak. After seeing the email today for this month’s tutorial, IMANU’s ‘Starting From Scratch’, I decided this was a good month to put forth the following challenge:

Write a demo using only one DAW, using only the sounds and tools provided in your DAW. So if you use Ableton, you have that suite of samples and tools; if you use Logic, you have set of sounds and tools; etc.

Continuing with Shrike’s newly established guidelines: If you intend to participate, please give reply with some sort of positive affirmation. Even if you just *think* you might, a public promise might encourage more users to stay the course. (of course no harm if you can’t follow through… we all know life happens). AND, if you don’t happen to reply with a claim to start, but show up with a tune, no worries.

Secondly: There is now a mid-month check-in, if we so desire. That can be everyone’s chance to get feedback, get help with issues, etc.

Once submissions are in, please listen to the submissions & pick one demo as your favorite, other than your own submission; if you cannot participate but listen to the submissions, add your voice to the discussion. Feedback on final submissions is encouraged as well, but not required. Just remember “Want feedback? Give feedback.”

SUBMISSIONS DUE: Thursday October 31, 2019

VOTES DUE: Before the November samples go live, usually the 2nd of the month. Genies and Moderators are exempt from prizes, so be sure to vote for another member.

SUBMIT: Upload a private track on SoundCloud and share the link in this thread any time after October 21, 2019. Collaborations are okay, but if you post a collab, you cannot also post a solo piece or additional collaborations.

PRIZE(?!?): GENIE HQ has final say, and will announce a winner at the conclusion of each month. Typically the winner will get a free month of Sample Genie next month, and possibly some additional feedback from a Sample Genie artist.

Any questions, just ask. Also, if you have any recommendations or ideas for future challenges, send them our way please!

Also, if you are feeling generous, save your demo as a project or template for your preferred DAW, and share it here!

Let’s up the ante and throw in a little folder of bonus samples too 😀
These will be given only to the winner of this competition, so a nice little exclusive…

He’s got some great sounding stuff, was not on my radar until I started looking at them, then looked him up. Also check out the Polarity pack, he’s got some interesting stuff as well.

Yeah I left this one a bit last minute but it turns out Live has some really awesome samples hidden away so I managed to completely avoid any MIDI which was cool

wow dope tracks! I am very thankful for you all. The process of starting a few sketch, trying to finish one, running race against the time, letting it away, listening your demos several times, thinking for hours on the priority of my filters was a special gift to improve myself.
      My vote goes to uporny!
I really like the way how natural it is pushing me forward from the first to the last second. thats the thing makes music from the loops.
Also massive respect n support for Fake n Joppa!

Finally got round to listening to everyone’s entries, big ups to uporny for a solid stepper and Joppa for not bailing on Reason, but my vote this month is gonna have to go to Berko for a really solid piece of neuro. Love your basses, they really gel the whole tune together really well, my only criticism would be more hi-hats/percussion but I can’t really blame you considering what the challenge was. What DAW did you use out of interest?

Thanks a lot! Im on Bitwig. There is an interesting operator alike FM(PM) synth that I don’t completely understand how does it work but somehow its so strong for basses. if you gonna ever try bigwig check this out (Phase-4)
. Iam rlly jealous to your mixdown skills by the way!

      Berko
Pure Drama on the intro, very nice work there

drop is solid, perhaps some more intricacy in the drums might liven the tune up
a bit too ‘grid drums’ as Chris Blu mar ten would call them

      Great tune though!

      Joppa
Loud drum mixing, nice and clear snare is awesome perhaps too loud?
Track is good, but doesn’t stand out as it is yet.

      Fake
The details guy. Nice stuff, great balance in the mix, drums and very nice.
The odd musical note choices give this an edge which works
Nice bass harmonics mixing. The lead synth perhaps sounds a little too ‘stock’ ?

      Uporny

Nice tension on the build, techy sounding tune. Nice use of enveloping on the bass and automating that.

The house vote goes to Berko this month!
